Portfolio assessment Schools working on the initial development of these guidelines identified portfolio assessment as an approach that is well suited to the students in question and to the kinds of tasks involved in assessing work on PLUs. Portfolios provide students with concrete evidence of their progress and achievements, which they discuss, review and share with teachers, parents and peers. This in turn enhances their self-esteem as active learners. Portfolios can exist in hard copy and/or electronic form. An electronic portfolio, also known as an e-portfolio or digital portfolio, is a collection of a student’s work created using word processing and other multimedia presentations. Examples of types of evidence of learning that might be included in the portfolio are • written work (stories, letters, poetry) • project work and/or work in visual arts • charts, diagrams, photographs • video recordings of the learner’s participation in an activity, event or achievement • recordings of musical work.
